David Hodkinson: the 1950s haven’t had their final say!

David Hodkinson: retro at heart, modernity in mind

At David Hodkinson, design likes to look back. But always with a view to moving forward. A British interior architect and designer, David Hodkinson has a passion for timeless lines, warm materials and the elegance of 1950s furniture.

After studying architecture at Oxford Brookes University, then at the Royal College of Art in London, he worked for several British architectural firms before settling in Vietnam in 2000. Three years later, he founded his own architecture and interior design practice there, noor design. It was his meeting with Cyril Laborde, founder of the French design label Red Edition, that gave rise to a particularly memorable collaboration. Together, they reinterpret the aesthetics of the 1950s, drawing inspiration in particular from Scandinavian design and its leading figures, such as Finn Juhl and Alvar Aalto.

From 2006 onwards, the first pieces in the Fifties collection began to emerge. Solid wood, coloured lacquers, compass legs and harmonious proportions come together to create a vintage yet resolutely contemporary world. This signature style is also evident in the Floating armchair, whose airy lines offer a fresh take on Scandinavian comfort.

At Maison Vachon, these creations enable the creation of warm, elegant event spaces brimming with personality. For David Hodkinson, vintage is not about nostalgia. It is a way of reinventing the present.

Fifties Sofa: retro style takes centre stage in the living room

With the Fifties Sofa, produced by Red Edition, David Hodkinson reinterprets the design codes of 1950s Scandinavian furniture. Its solid oak compass-style base, clean lines and generous proportions give it a look that is both vintage and contemporary.

At Maison Vachon, the sofa is available in a range of colours and upholstery options, from understated grey to a bolder duck-egg blue velvet. This variety allows you to create very different atmospheres: a cosy living room with retro touches, an elegant VIP area or a contemporary lounge punctuated with colour. Its comfort and inviting silhouette make it a centrepiece for professional events, showrooms and receptions.

A sofa that takes us back to the 1950s, without ever looking outdated.

Fifties coffee tables: vintage with a flair for form

With the Fifties coffee tables, David Hodkinson plays with organic shapes, proportions and combinations of materials. Their triangular silhouette with softened corners evokes the iconic designs of the 1950s, whilst their lacquered finishes add a touch of modernity. Produced by Red Edition, they combine the elegance of wood with colours that add depth to any interior.

Available from Maison Vachon in various sizes and colours, notably in mineral green, they allow you to create harmonious ensembles or play with contrasts. Paired with the Fifties sofa or contemporary armchairs, they become the focal point of a lounge area. Their size also makes it easy to create welcoming arrangements, ideal for trade shows, reception areas or receptions.

Coffee tables that show an eye for detail. And a sense of conviviality.

The Floating Armchair: comfort takes flight

With the Floating Armchair, David Hodkinson explores a more ethereal aesthetic, whilst remaining true to his Scandinavian inspirations. Its name, which means ‘floating’ in English, immediately evokes its distinctive silhouette. The seat appears to be suspended within a solid oak frame, whose slender lines and armrests extending all the way to the floor create a subtle interplay between lightness and stability. Produced by Red Edition, the armchair combines traditional woodworking craftsmanship with carefully selected fabric upholstery.

At Maison Vachon, it is available in several shades, ranging from mottled beige to light grey, including Indian blue, celadon and more contrasting combinations. This colour palette allows it to be incorporated into a wide variety of settings, whether a contemporary lounge area, a showroom or a reception area with a more intimate atmosphere. Paired with the Fifties sofa and the collection’s coffee tables, it helps to create a cohesive aesthetic, blending vintage charm with contemporary elegance.

An armchair that seems to float. Yet it keeps its feet firmly on the ground.

Why choose David Hodkinson’s designs for an event?

David Hodkinson’s furniture has one major advantage: it combines the charm of retro design with an aesthetic that is contemporary enough to blend into a wide variety of settings. The Fifties Sofa helps to create welcoming and comfortable spaces. The Fifties Coffee Tables add a graphic and colourful touch, whilst the Floating Armchair completes the ensemble with its light, sculptural lines.

These designs are particularly well-suited to VIP areas, trade fairs, showrooms, corporate events and receptions. Their warm materials, colours and organic shapes help to create a convivial atmosphere where guests naturally feel at home. David Hodkinson’s furniture hire service thus offers the opportunity to design lounge areas with a distinct character, without compromising on comfort or functionality.

Because a successful event is also one where people feel at ease.
