Trained at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, she continued her studies under influential figures such as Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
In 1941, she met Hans Knoll, founder of a fledgling furniture company. Together, they developed the Knoll brand, which would go on to become one of the leading names in modern American design. But Florence Knoll did not limit herself to designing furniture. Through the creation of the Knoll Planning Unit, she revolutionised the design of professional spaces by proposing a holistic approach: furniture, circulation, materials, colours and the organisation of spaces were conceived as a single, integrated whole.
