Isamu Noguchi: straddling two cultures and several disciplines

Born in Los Angeles in 1904 to a Japanese father and an American mother, Isamu Noguchi was a Japanese-American artist and designer whose work extended far beyond the realm of furniture.

Trained as a sculptor, he spent time in Paris in the late 1920s and worked alongside Constantin Brancusi, an encounter that proved pivotal to his career. Sculpture, furniture, lighting, theatre sets, gardens and public spaces: Noguchi went on to explore these disciplines with a single ambition – to give form to space. His work is notably characterised by his dual Japanese and American heritage and by a constant quest for harmony.

This approach is naturally reflected in his furniture. The lines become freer, the forms more organic, and the objects sometimes seem more sculpted than drawn. With Noguchi, nothing is entirely fixed. A table seems to float, a sofa traces a curve through space, and a pouffe takes on the appearance of a pebble.

All of which playfully blurs the boundary between design and sculpture.

Free-form shapes – and it shows!

The Coffee Table, designed in 1944 and now produced by Vitra, is probably one of Isamu Noguchi’s most famous creations. The designer himself regarded it as one of his most successful pieces of furniture.

Its imposing glass top rests on two identical solid wood elements arranged at right angles. A surprisingly simple construction that gives rise to a sculptural and instantly recognisable silhouette.

Graphic yet not rigid, Noguchi’s Coffee Table fits seamlessly into a lounge, a showroom, a hotel or a premium interior design setting. The transparency of the glass allows the eye to wander, whilst its base becomes almost a sculpture at the centre of the space.

Another expression of his organic aesthetic is the Freeform Sofa, designed in 1946 and reissued today by Vitra. With its curved lines and asymmetrical silhouette, it represents a radical departure from the traditional geometry of the sofa. Vitra, in fact, compares the ensemble formed by the sofa and its ottoman to large pebbles smoothed by water. In a lobby, reception area, showroom or reception hall, the Freeform Sofa naturally becomes a centrepiece. Its curves also allow for more fluid circulation and less conventional layouts.

The Freeform Ottoman, also designed in 1946 and produced by Vitra, is a natural extension of this aesthetic. Compact and rounded, it can complement the sofa, serve as an extra seat or simply add a graphic touch to the interior design.
