For Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, design is all about function,
observation and ingenuity. But that certainly doesn’t mean they lack a sense of humour. Born in Milan – Pier Giacomo in 1913 and Achille in 1918 – both brothers trained as architects. Pier Giacomo graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1937, and Achille in 1944. They began working together in the 1940s and opened their joint studio in Milan in 1945, developing a collaboration over more than twenty years that would leave a profound mark on the history of Italian design.
Their approach? Observing how things are used, experimenting with materials and industrial techniques, occasionally reimagining familiar forms and, above all, never adding anything simply for decorative purposes. A philosophy that would give rise to numerous creations which have become benchmarks of 20th-century design.
For the Castiglionis, function is therefore essential. But a little touch of whimsy never hurt anyone.
There’s no better illustration of this spirit than the Snoopy lamp, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1967 and produced by Flos. With its wide, angled reflector resting on a cylindrical base, its silhouette evokes the famous dog created by Charles M. Schulz. This humorous nod to the character does not prevent the two designers from achieving a perfect balance of form and function.
The Snoopy combines an enamelled metal reflector with an imposing base made of white Carrara marble. The base houses the lamp’s technical components – a particularly innovative solution at the time – whilst ensuring the stability of the whole. The result is almost sculptural: two very simple forms, two contrasting materials and an instantly recognisable silhouette. More than half a century after its creation, the Snoopy has, in fact, been included in the collections of the MoMA in New York.
It just goes to show that you can have marble, metal… and plenty of humour.
In event design, lighting isn’t just about providing light. A light fitting can also become a key part of the décor. And with the Snoopy, it’s hard to find anything more instantly recognisable.
