USM was founded in 1885 with a simple acronym: the initials of its founder, Ulrich Schärer, combined with those of the place where the company was founded, Münsingen. Before becoming a furniture manufacturer, USM was initially a company specialising in metalworking and locksmithing.
In 1963, architect Fritz Haller and Paul Schärer, grandson of the founder, developed a modular construction system designed to be expanded according to the company's needs. These pieces of furniture were originally intended solely for the company's brand new offices, but they were soon marketed commercially. Among the first customers was the Rothschild bank in Paris.
Made from the steel rods that are so characteristic of the brand, this timeless furniture system has finally been recognised for its versatility, durability and style. Thanks to its modular design, the collection is available in a range of USM storage systems: low storage units,
high storage units, bookcases and many other possibilities.
With our designer furniture hire service, we offer these iconic pieces for hire to furnish your workspaces, from contemporary offices to meeting rooms. And why not in a lounge?
In 2001, USM had the honour of being included in the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York. With low emissions of chemicals and particles linked to the manufacture of its products, USM was the first European company to be certified by the Greenguard Environmental Institute. In 2018, it received Cradle to Cradle® certification for its USM Haller and USM Kitos M ranges.
