Anderssen & Voll: the next generation of Nordic design

At Anderssen & Voll, Scandinavian minimalism is anything but cold. The lines are simple, the proportions carefully considered, but comfort always remains at the heart of their design philosophy. Founded in Oslo in 2009 by Norwegian designers Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll, the studio has established itself as a leading figure in contemporary Scandinavian design. From furniture and lighting to accessories, their work has earned them several awards, including Norwegian and Scandinavian Designer of the Year.

Their philosophy is based on a balance: drawing on the codes of Nordic design whilst evolving them. A familiar form can thus be softened, simplified or slightly reimagined to create a new way of using and viewing it. This approach is particularly evident in their collaboration with the Danish brand Muuto, with collections such as Rest and Outline.

Minimalist, yes. But certainly not at the expense of comfort.

Rest: as the name suggests…

With the Rest collection, produced by Muuto, Anderssen & Voll offer their take on the contemporary Scandinavian sofa: simple lines on the outside and plenty of softness on the inside.

The Rest 3-seater sofa is all about comfort. Its deep seat, generous cushions and the characteristic small pleats in its upholstery give it a particularly inviting look. The design remains contemporary, but without being overly rigid. In a lounge area, lobby, showroom or VIP area, it creates a genuine focal point for socialising. Its width also provides a substantial presence, helping to define the space without the need for multiple pieces of furniture.

The Rest 2-seater sofa adopts the same design language in a more compact format. Also produced by Muuto, it retains the deep seat and enveloping silhouette, whilst being easier to incorporate into smaller spaces or arrangements combining several seating units.

And to complete the set, the Rest ottoman features the generous proportions and characteristic comfort of the collection. Placed in front of a sofa, used as an additional seat or on its own in a lounge area, it allows for more flexible layouts.

Rest certainly lives up to its name. The hardest part is getting up again.

Outline: comfort takes centre stage

With the cream-coloured Outline sofa, also produced by Muuto, Anderssen & Voll have shifted their focus slightly. The Outline collection reinterprets Scandinavian sofas from the 1960s with a much more architectural silhouette. Its name derives precisely from its very distinctive outline: clean, graphic exterior lines that contrast with a deep, comfortable seat.  The designers explain that they sought to create a sofa that was visually light, elegant and comfortable, applying certain principles of modern architecture to furniture design.

In the cream version offered by Maison Vachon, the Outline sofa brings brightness and understated elegance to any interior scheme. Its structured design works particularly well in a showroom, a corporate space, an exhibition stand or a contemporary lounge. Alongside the more generous proportions of Rest, Outline thus offers a different interpretation of comfort.
