Konstantin Grcic: nothing is there by chance

Konstantin Grcic does not set out to please everyone. And that is perhaps precisely what makes his work so interesting. Born in Munich in 1965, the German designer began by training as a cabinetmaker before studying design at the Royal College of Art in London. These two areas of training have had a lasting influence on his approach to design: on the one hand, a deep understanding of materials and craftsmanship; on the other, a more industrial and experimental approach to design. In 1991, he founded Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in Munich. He went on to collaborate extensively with major manufacturers such as Magis, Vitra, Flos and ClassiCon.

His style? It’s difficult to sum it up in a single phrase. Grcic prefers to show how objects are constructed rather than seeking to conceal their structure. Geometry, materials, assemblies and technical constraints thus become integral elements of the design.

In his work, nothing is decorative by chance. And nothing is complicated just for the sake of being complicated.

A truly unique chair

It is impossible to talk about Konstantin Grcic without starting with the Chair One, designed in 2003 and produced by Magis. With its shell made up of geometric facets in die-cast aluminium, it almost resembles a miniature architectural structure. Angular, graphic and deliberately unconventional, it has become one of the designer’s most recognisable creations. Whether in an exhibition stand, a dining area, a terrace or a contemporary installation, the Chair One is enough on its own to give the space a distinct identity.
