Pierre Paulin: Design That Never Stops Turning Heads!

Pierre Paulin, the Designer Who Gives Comfort a New Shape

For Pierre Paulin, furniture is about more than just functionality. It embraces curves, plays with volumes and challenges conventions. With his sculptural armchairs and bold colors, the French designer left his mark on design history by creating pieces that are as comfortable as they are original. Born in 1927 in Paris, Pierre Paulin spent his childhood in Laon, where he developed a passion for creativity from an early age. Artistic talent ran in the family: his great-uncle, Freddy Stoll, was a sculptor, while his uncle Georges Paulin was an automotive designer, notably for Bentley and Rolls-Royce, and the inventor of a retractable car roof system.

In 1951, he joined Marcel Gascoin's studio after studying at the École Camondo under Maxime Old. There, he discovered an approach to furniture design that emphasized functionality, comfort and simplicity. His early influences came from Scandinavian design, as well as the American creations of Charles and Ray Eames and Florence Knoll. His breakthrough came in 1953 at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, where he presented his first creations in the "Le Foyer d'aujourd'hui" section. This recognition opened the doors to Thonet France, which began producing his furniture in 1954.

But it was in 1958 that his career took a decisive turn when he began collaborating with the Dutch furniture manufacturer Artifort. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he developed a new generation of seating with soft, rounded shapes, combining innovative structures, foam and stretch fabrics. A true revolution in furniture design!

Among his most famous creations are the mushroom armchair, the ribbon armchair and the little tulip armchair. Three iconic pieces that perfectly illustrate his passion for experimentation and his determination to reinvent the way we sit. His talent also extended beyond furniture: Pierre Paulin notably contributed to the interior design of President Georges Pompidou's private apartments at the Élysée Palace. His creations have also become part of the collections of prestigious museums around the world.

At la Maison Vachon, several of his iconic armchairs are available for rental, bringing a retro yet contemporary designer touch to events.

With Pierre Paulin, design breaks free from convention. And comfort takes on a whole new shape!

Mushroom Armchair: Design That Grows on You

With the mushroom armchair, designed in 1960, Pierre Paulin created one of the most recognizable pieces of 1960s design. Produced by Artifort, this armchair certainly lives up to its name. Its rounded, enveloping silhouette resembles a mushroom, with the seat and backrest appearing to form a single continuous volume.

Its design is based on a quest for comfort and fluidity. The fabric upholstery follows the curves of the structure, creating a generous seat without rigid lines or sharp angles. An innovative approach at the time, transforming the armchair into a truly sculptural object. At la Maison Vachon, the mushroom armchair is available for rental to furnish lounge areas, VIP spaces and showrooms.

With its retro-futuristic aesthetic, it fits naturally into event settings inspired by the 1960s and 1970s, while also adding an original touch to contemporary interiors. Paired with a designer coffee table or a statement lamp, it quickly becomes a centerpiece of the space.

An extraordinary mushroom that's anything but ordinary. And one that takes design in exciting new directions!

Ribbon Armchair: When Furniture Bends the Rules of Design

With the ribbon armchair, created in 1966, Pierre Paulin pushed his exploration of shapes and volumes even further. Produced by Artifort, this armchair takes inspiration from a ribbon that folds and unfolds to form a seat. Its continuous silhouette, made up of generous curves, gives it an almost abstract appearance. Yet behind its sculptural design lies a sophisticated approach to ergonomics. Its structure and padding are designed to provide comfortable seating, while the fabric upholstery emphasizes the fluidity of its lines.

The ribbon armchair has become a true icon of modern design, notably entering the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At la Maison Vachon, it is available for rental to bring character to event spaces.

In a showroom, VIP lounge or product launch, the ribbon armchair immediately catches the eye. Its distinctive shape makes it a particularly interesting piece for creating bold event settings, designing conversation areas or showcasing a brand's identity.

An armchair that bends over backwards to make an impression!

Little Tulip Armchair: A Flower of Design

With the little tulip armchair, Pierre Paulin once again draws inspiration from organic forms to create elegant and inviting seating. Produced by Artifort, this armchair evokes a tulip opening its petals. Its enveloping backrest and upholstered seat create a soft silhouette, while its central swivel base adds a sense of lightness.

More understated than the mushroom or ribbon armchairs, the little tulip nevertheless retains all the designer's signature qualities: flowing lines, balanced proportions and careful attention to comfort. At la Maison Vachon, the little tulip armchair is available for rental in grey Tonca fabric, with a polished aluminum base.

Its refined aesthetic allows it to blend effortlessly into a variety of event settings. Around a meeting table, in a conversation area, showroom or VIP lounge, it adds a contemporary touch while encouraging interaction. Its compact proportions and swivel seat also make it an excellent choice for reception areas and professional networking spaces.

A tulip that never fades. And always remains effortlessly elegant!
