Born in Boxtel, the Netherlands, in 1963, Marcel Wanders is a Dutch
designer and interior architect known for an approach to design that seamlessly blends functionality and theatricality. Trained at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, he achieved international renown in 1996 with the Knotted Chair, created for Droog Design. This now-iconic chair already revealed his taste for experimentation, craftsmanship and objects that make a statement.
In 2001, he co-founded Moooi, a Dutch design house of which he also became artistic director. His creative vision then came to the fore through furniture, lighting and objects that play freely with volumes, patterns and decorative references. Throughout his career, Marcel Wanders has collaborated with numerous brands such as Flos, Alessi, Kartell, B&B Italia and Moroso, whilst also undertaking interior design projects around the world. In 2014, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam dedicated a major retrospective to him.
For Marcel Wanders, furniture does not merely occupy space. It plays a full part in the décor and, where possible, catches the eye in the process.
With the Container range, Marcel Wanders transforms very simple shapes into furniture with a strong personality. The Container Side Table, designed by Marcel Wanders and produced by Moooi, combines a round top with a cylindrical base characteristic of the collection. And Marcel Wanders doesn’t just design furniture. With the Zeppelin pendant light, created for Flos, the designer is this time playing with light and volume. Its imposing structure, enveloped in a thin white membrane, seems to float in space and casts a soft glow. Hanging above a table, a lounge area, a bar or in the centre of a reception area, it quickly becomes a key feature of the interior design. More than just a light fitting, the Zeppelin acts as a suspended sculpture that adorns the space as much as it illuminates it.
The Container Side Table, the Container High Table and the Zeppelin Pendant Light illustrate three ways of transforming a space: structuring the layout, supporting different uses and creating atmosphere through lighting. His creations have enough character to establish a visual identity without the need for an abundance of decorative elements.
